About

HAEO is a Home Assistant Energy Optimiser that plans battery, solar, grid and load flows using linear programming. It builds a model of the home energy system from configured elements such as batteries, electric vehicles, solar, loads, grid connections, connections, junctions and inverters, then minimizes total cost over a planning horizon using electricity prices and forecasts. Optimization reruns when input data changes, with a debounce window, and when the horizon advances. Results appear as sensors, numbers and switches, and an action can run an optimization or save a diagnostics file. Settings cover the planning horizon from 2 to 7 days, an option to relax impossible plans, and optional recording of forecast data. Repair notices flag problems such as disconnected components or a failed optimization, and it runs locally with setup in the UI.

HAEO setup

  • Expose raw model elementsShows low-level model elements you connect manually. Leave off unless you are deliberately building the optimization model yourself.
  • Planning horizonA preset covering 2 to 7 days, or a sensor whose forecast times set the start and end of every period.
  • System name

HAEO settings

  • Expose raw model elementsShows low-level model elements you connect manually. Leave off unless you are deliberately building the optimization model yourself.
  • Debounce window (seconds)
  • Record forecast dataWhen enabled, forecast attributes are saved to the recorder database. This significantly increases database size but allows debugging historical forecasts. Disabled by default to reduce database load.
  • Relax impossible plansWhen the forecasts ask for more than your system can do, such as a load above what the grid and batteries can supply, plan with the fewest constraints relaxed instead of failing. A repair issue lists what was relaxed. Leave off to fail the optimization and list the constraints that conflict.
  • Planning horizonA preset covering 2 to 7 days, or a sensor whose forecast times set the start and end of every period.

From the README

HAEO (Home Assistant Energy Optimizer) is a custom integration that optimizes your home's energy usage in real-time using linear programming. It helps you minimize energy costs by intelligently managing battery storage, solar generation, grid import/export, and loads based on electricity prices, forecasts, and system constraints.

  • Real-time Optimization: Continuously optimizes energy flow across all connected devices
  • Multi-device Support: Batteries, solar panels, grid connection, loads, and energy flows
  • Power Policies: Source→destination pricing so the optimizer values solar, grid, and battery flows differently (guide)
  • Price-based Optimization: Minimizes costs using real-time and forecast electricity prices
  • Solar Integration: Optimizes solar generation with curtailment support
  • Battery Management: Smart charging/discharging based on prices and SOC constraints
  • Flexible Configuration: Easy-to-use UI configuration via Home Assistant
  • HiGHS Solver: Fast, reliable linear programming via bundled highspy bindings
  • Rich Sensors: Power, energy, cost, and state of charge sensors for all devices
