About
Utility Meter Next Gen is a Home Assistant integration that extends the built-in Utility Meter helper with more options. It creates consumption meters from a single source sensor, with one or several reset cycles, either predefined schedules or custom CRON patterns. Consumption can be split into tariffs, including a total tariff that keeps collecting. A rate sensor or number helper can drive cost sensors, with an adjustment factor for unit differences, and a calibration value can be applied at each reset. It adds select and sensor entities, runs locally, is configured through the UI, and offers calibrate and reset actions. New meters collect only from setup onward and do not rebuild earlier consumption from history.

Create a Next Gen Utility Meter
- Configuration typeChoose the type of Utility Meter to create: a predefined reset cycle, a custom CRON pattern, or a set of predefined Utility Meters (generates various reset cycles from one configuration).
- New Sensor Name
- Input sensor for Metering (Required)
- Input Calculation Sensor (Optional if you wish to create a price meter)If you want to use a sensor to calculate a price attribute for the Meter, please select it here. If not selected, the meter will just report the source value.
Set up the Meter using a Predefined Schedule
- Calibration Sensor for Calculation (Optional)Use this sensor or numeric helper instead of the fixed calculation calibration value. Read at initialization and each reset; invalid or unavailable readings use zero. Use the same currency units as the cost sensor.
- Calibration Sensor for Consumption (Optional)Use this sensor or numeric helper instead of the fixed consumption calibration value. Read at initialization and each reset; invalid or unavailable readings use zero.
- Sensor always availableIf activated, the sensor will always show the last known value, even if the source entity is unavailable or unknown.
- Calibration Value for Calculation (Optional)When the reset cycle is reached, the calculation sensor will be set to this value. This is useful if you want to start the calculation sensor at a specific value.
- Calibration Value for Consumption (Optional)When the reset cycle is reached, the consumption sensor will be set to this value. This is useful if you want to start the meter at a specific value.
- Create a separate Calculation Sensor (Optional)In addition to the Consumption Sensor, a Calculation Sensor will be created which can be used to calculate a price attribute for the Meter. If you do not need this, you can disable it here.
- Predefined Reset Cycle
- Delta ValuesEnable if the source values are delta values since the last reading instead of absolute values.
- Net ConsumptionEnable if the source is a net meter, meaning it can both increase and decrease.
- Offset (Optional, e.g., to set a starting value for the meter)Offset the meter reset by days, hours, or minutes (seconds are ignored). For weekly meters, day offsets are relative to the selected week start day.
- Periodically resettingEnable if the source may periodically reset to 0, for example at boot of the measuring device. If disabled, new readings are directly recorded after data unavailability.
- Reset CycleSelect a predefined reset cycle for the meter. This will determine how often the meter resets its values.
- Adjustment factor for the calculation sensor (Optional)If you need to adjust the calculation to match the raw source sensor, you can set the multiplier here. For example if your Input Calculation Sensor is $/kWh and your Consumption Sensor is in MW, you would set this to 1000 to get the correct price.
- Week start dayChoose the first day of the week for weekly meters, or use the Home Assistant locale setting.
- Tariffs - add a 'total' tariff to track total consumptionA list of supported tariffs, leave empty if only a single tariff is needed. If you want to track the total consumption, add a 'total' tariff.
Set up the Meter using a CRON pattern
- Create a CRON pattern, e.g., 0/5 * * * *
- Delta ValuesEnable if the source values are delta values since the last reading instead of absolute values.
- Net ConsumptionEnable if the source is a net meter, meaning it can both increase and decrease.
- Periodically resettingEnable if the source may periodically reset to 0, for example at boot of the measuring device. If disabled, new readings are directly recorded after data unavailability.
