About

Speedtest is a Home Assistant app that runs internet speed tests using the speedtest binary from Speedtest.net. It exists because the built-in Speedtest.net integration relies on a third-party Python implementation that may give less accurate measurements. The app avoids installing custom scripts or speedtest-cli directly into the operating system, which earlier approaches required. A test server can be chosen by its numeric ID, and without one the app picks a random server on each run, so fixing a server keeps results comparable. Use requires accepting the Speedtest license terms and privacy policy in the app's configuration tab. It needs Home Assistant OS, supports aarch64, amd64, armhf and armv7, and has access to the Home Assistant API.

From the docs

Home Assistant has a native integration with Speedtest.net. However, it uses a third-party speedtest implementation in python that may not produce accurate measures. This addon aims to integrate the official speedtest binary with Home Assistant to mitigate this problem.

There have been previous attempts to do this, but imply the installation of custom scripts and the speedtest-cli directly into the operating system. This
