About

Mealie is an app that runs a recipe manager and meal planner inside Home Assistant. It imports a recipe from a web address, keeping the ingredients, steps, times and picture, and can also take a photo, pasted text or a bulk list of addresses. Recipes can be placed on a weekly calendar, which produces a shopping list that adds up repeated ingredients, and household members each get their own login. Its own page opens from the sidebar, and the app needs Home Assistant OS on aarch64 or amd64. The Mealie integration is discovered automatically and brings the meal plan, shopping lists and recipe count into Home Assistant, plus services to add a recipe to the plan or an item to a list from automations. Linking the two uses an API token created in Mealie.

From the docs

Mealie is a recipe manager and meal planner that keeps your cooking in your own house. Give it the address of a recipe you found online and it pulls out the parts you actually cook from: the ingredients, the steps, the times and the picture. The life story above the recipe stays behind.

From there it becomes a planner. Put recipes on a calendar for the week ahead and it works out the shopping list, adding up the same ingredient across every meal on it. Recipes can be scaled, tagged, organised into cookbooks and shared with the rest of the household, each with their own login.

Configuration

  • Log levelControls the level of log output by the app and can be changed to be more or less verbose, which might be useful when you are dealing with an unknown issue. Each level automatically includes the messages of a more severe level.
  • Base URLThe address this app is reached at, for example https://mealie.example.com. Used for the links in the emails Mealie sends and for the OpenID Connect callback. Leave it empty when you only use this app from your own network.
  • Allow public sign-upLet anybody who can reach this app create an account without an invitation. Leave this off and invite people from the user management page instead.
  • SMTP hostThe mail server used to send invitations, password resets and notifications. Leave it empty to switch email off entirely.
  • SMTP portThe port of the mail server, usually 587.
  • SMTP sender nameThe name the emails from this app appear to come from.
  • SMTP sender addressThe address the emails from this app are sent from.
  • SMTP authenticationHow the connection to the mail server is secured. Use TLS unless your provider tells you otherwise. NONE sends unauthenticated, which only makes sense for a relay on your own network.
  • SMTP usernameThe username for the mail server. Leave it empty when the server needs no authentication.
  • SMTP passwordThe password that goes with the SMTP username.
  • SSLEnables/Disables encrypted SSL (HTTPS) for direct access to the app. This setting has no effect on the Ingress service.
  • Certificate fileThe certificate file to use for SSL. The file must be stored in the /ssl/ directory.
  • Private key fileThe private key file to use for SSL. The file must be stored in the /ssl/ directory.
  • Environment variablesAdditional environment variables for Mealie, by name and value, for the many settings Mealie takes from its environment, such as LDAP or OpenID Connect. Those that this app manages itself, such as the port and the data directory, cannot be changed this way.
