About

AirCast is a Home Assistant app that lets Apple AirPlay clients send audio to Chromecast players. It detects Chromecast players on the network and creates a virtual AirPlay device for each one, acting as a bridge between the AirPlay client and the real player. The app is based on the AirConnect project and runs only on Home Assistant OS, on aarch64 and amd64 systems. Audio arrives from the AirPlay controller as real-time RTP frames and is passed on to the Chromecast as a continuous HTTP stream that the player pulls. Options cover log verbosity, the IP address to bind to, buffering for RTP and HTTP audio when playback stutters, and whether the timing reference may drift. It uses the host network and has no sidebar page of its own.

From the docs

Apple devices use AirPlay to send audio to other devices, but this is not compatible with Google's Chromecast. This app tries to solve this compatibility gap.

It detects Chromecast players in your network and creates virtual AirPlay devices for each of them. It acts as a bridge between the AirPlay client and the real Chromecast player.

Permissions

  • Host networkUses the host's network directly instead of its own.
  • Supervisor APICan talk to the Supervisor, which manages apps and the system.

Configuration

  • Log levelControls the level of log details the app provides.
  • AddressAllows you to specify the IP address the AirCast server needs to bind to.
  • RTP LatencyAllows you to tweak the buffering, which is needed when the audio is stuttering (e.g., low-quality network). This option specifies the number of ms the app has to buffer the RTP audio (AirPlay). Setting this value below 500ms is not recommended! Setting the value to 0 makes the app get the value from AirPlay.
  • HTTP LatencyAllows you to tweak the buffering, which is needed when the audio is stuttering (e.g., low-quality network). This option specifies the number of ms the app has to buffer the HTTP audio.
  • DriftAllow to let timing reference drift (no click).
