About

Media Index is a Home Assistant integration that indexes images and videos from local media folders. It scans configured folders, reads EXIF data from images and metadata from MP4 and MOV videos, and can turn GPS coordinates into location names through reverse geocoding with cached lookups. It adds services for random or ordered media selection, with filters for folder, file type, date range and favorites, plus an anniversary mode that finds photos from the same date across years. Further features include burst photo detection based on time and GPS proximity, a duplicate finder with a dry-run mode, and favorite handling based on star ratings. Cast slideshow services can run on any media player entity without a dashboard card. It works locally, is set up in the UI, and also serves as a companion to the Media Card.

Setting it up

Install it from the Marketplace and restart Home Assistant, then add it under Settings, Devices and services.

Set up Media Index

  • Base media folder (filesystem path: /media, /config/www, NOT media-source://)
  • Optional Media Source URI (e.g., media-source://media_source/local/ when using /config/www as base folder)
  • Watched folders (comma-separated relative paths)
  • Rescan on HA restart (catches changes while HA was offline; scans watched folders only when configured, otherwise full scan)
  • Scan schedule
  • Extract EXIF metadata
  • Enable geocoding (GPS to location names)
  • Coordinate precision (2-6 decimal places)
  • Use native language names (e.g., 日本 instead of Japan)
  • Max startup scan time (seconds)
  • Concurrent scan workers
  • Auto-install libmediainfo for video metadata extraction. During initial setup, Home Assistant restart required after install. When using install_libmediainfo service, integration auto-reloads (no restart needed). If you have multiple Media Index instances, only enable this for one.
  • Allow scanning without libmediainfo (images only). Enable this if you do not have video files and want scanning to proceed even when libmediainfo is not installed. Video metadata will not be extracted.
  • Batch size (files per batch)
  • Cache max age (days)
