About

Better Thermostat adds smart control to existing radiator thermostat valves that appear as climate entities in Home Assistant. It can measure room temperature with a separate sensor, and it can turn heating off when a window or door opens, or when outdoor temperature or a weather entity says so. Several valves can be grouped into one, and valve maintenance runs automatically to keep valves from sticking over the summer. Control algorithms include MPC, PID, TPI, AI Time Based, and plain target temperature matching, with auto-tuning for PID still in beta. Preset temperatures are adjustable through number entities and are kept across restarts, and extra sensors and switches expose values such as heating power and child lock. It works locally, is set up in the UI, and offers device triggers such as window opened or target temperature reached.

Advanced

  • Overheating protection? Some TRVs don't close the valve completely when the temperature is reached. Or the radiator has a lot of rest heat. This can cause overheating. This option can prevent this.
  • If 'auto' means 'heat' for your TRV and you want to swap it
  • Ignore all inputs on the TRV like a child lock
  • If you use HomematicIP, you should enable this to slow down the requests to prevent the duty cycle
  • If your thermostat has no own maintenance mode, you can use this one
  • Calibration typeHow the calibration is applied on the TRV *Target Temperature Based*: Apply the calibration to the target temperature. *Offset Based*: Apply the calibration to the temperature offset.
  • Calibration modeHow the calibration is calculated *Normal*: Uses your external temperature sensor to correct the TRV's internal sensor. Simple and reliable for most setups. *Aggressive*: Similar to Normal, but pushes the TRV harder to reach temperature faster. Good if your room heats slowly. *AI Time Based*: Learns your room's heating patterns over time and adjusts automatically. Balances comfort and efficiency. *MPC Predictive*: Advanced algorithm that predicts temperature changes and optimizes valve position. Best for stable, efficient heating with minimal overshooting. Learns your room's thermal behavior. *PID Controller*: Classic control method that responds to temperature errors. Good for systems with varying heating power or external disturbances. *TPI Controller*: Calculates heating duty cycles based on temperature difference. Simple and effective for consistent heating patterns.
  • If your TRV doesn't support the 'off' mode, enable this to use target temperature 5°C instead

From the README

  • Uses a temperature sensor far away from the radiators to measure the real room temperature
  • Makes your TRVs fully compatible with Google Home
  • Let your windows disable your heating (avoid programming this via an automation)
  • Your weather forecast provider will turn your heat on/off
  • Or an outside air temperature sensor can do this as well
  • Does some valve maintenance automatically, to avoid them getting stuck closed over the summer
  • Group multiple TRVs to one (e.g. for a room with multiple radiators)
  • Enhance the default TRV Algorithm with some smartness to reduce energy consumption
  • Dynamic preset temperature learning & persistence (baseline/"no preset" remembers the last temperature you set and survives restarts)
  • Advanced Control Algorithms: Choose between MPC, PID, TPI, AI Time Based or simple target temperature matching for precise control.
  • Selectable Presets: Configure which preset modes are available for your thermostat during setup.
