About

Smart Cover Automation is an integration that automates window covers based on sun position, weather and time of day. It closes covers while the sun shines on a window on a hot day and opens them again when there is no direct sunlight, using a weather forecast entity or another sunshine source. Tilt control for slatted covers can be automatic, manual, a set value or driven externally, with a separate setting for night. It also offers evening closure, morning opening, a blocked time range, manual override detection and a lock mode that holds covers open, closed or in place, which can be triggered as an action. Simulation mode shows what would happen without moving covers, and movements are written to the logbook. It works locally and is set up in the UI.

Setting it up

Install it from the Marketplace and restart Home Assistant, then add it under Settings, Devices and services.

After setup

  • Daytime strategy:Choose how the integration should position covers during the day when heat protection is not active.
  • Daytime movement directions:Choose whether normal daytime control may open covers, close covers, or both.
  • Maximum cover position (global):The maximum closed position for all covers unless overridden per cover.
  • Minimum cover position (global):The minimum open position for all covers unless overridden per cover.
  • Cover position for evening closure (global):The cover position used for evening closure unless overridden per cover.
  • Tilt angle control (day):How to control the tilt angle of cover slats during the day.
  • Tilt angle control (night):How to control the tilt angle of cover slats at night (applied during evening closure).
  • Day tilt angle (set value):Fixed tilt angle for day mode. 0% = fully closed (vertical, blocks light), 100% = fully open (horizontal, lets light in). Only used when day tilt mode is set to 'Set value'.
  • Night tilt angle (set value):Fixed tilt angle for night mode. 0% = fully closed (vertical, blocks light), 100% = fully open (horizontal, lets light in). Only used when night tilt mode is set to 'Set value'.
  • Minimum tilt change:Minimum tilt change (%) required before sending a command. Prevents excessive motor wear from small adjustments.
  • Tilt drift tolerance:Maximum recent tilt settle drift (%) to ignore during the short settling period after an automation command. Larger tilt changes are treated as manual override.
  • Tilt open to cover open delay:Delay in seconds between opening the slats fully and reopening the cover. Only applies to covers with tilt support whose effective daytime tilt mode is Auto and that were previously closed for heat protection.
  • Cover movement to tilt delay:Delay in seconds between moving a cover and applying its tilt. Applies to automated position-and-tilt changes and force-open or force-close lock mode.
  • Vertical tilt position:Home Assistant tilt percentage for fully vertical slats. Auto mode treats this as the vertical slat position. Default: 0%.
  • Horizontal tilt position:Home Assistant tilt percentage for fully horizontal slats. Auto mode treats this as the horizontal slat position. Default: 100%.
  • Slat overlap ratio (d/L):Ratio of slat spacing to slat width (0.5–1.0). Lower values mean more overlap between slats. The default of 0.9 works well for most venetian blinds. Only relevant for Auto mode.
  • Stagger delay between covers:Delay in seconds between starting one cover movement and the next within the same automation iteration. Set to 0 to disable staggering.
  • Disable automation in time range:When enabled, the automation will not run during the specified time range.
  • Blocked time range: mode:Choose whether the blocked time range uses absolute configured times or is supplied by external entities.
  • Disable from:Start time of the period when the automation should be disabled. Ignored in external mode.
  • Disable until:End time of the period when the automation should be disabled. Ignored in external mode.
  • Pre-close for next-morning heat protection:When enabled, covers are pre-closed at the beginning of the blocked time range if the next morning is forecast to be hot and sunny.
  • Close covers in the evening:When enabled, covers will be closed automatically in the evening.
  • Evening closure: mode:Choose whether evening closure happens before sunset, after sunset, uses an absolute time, or is supplied by an entity.
  • Evening closure: time:Depending on the selected mode: relative delay from sunset or fixed time of day. Ignored in external mode.
  • Covers:Select the covers that should be closed in the evening.
  • Ignore manual override duration:When enabled, the evening closure can move selected covers even if a manual override pause is still active.
  • Keep covers closed:When enabled, selected covers are closed again during the overnight evening-closure period if they are reopened. Manual override duration is respected. Lock mode takes precedence, so covers are only re-closed after lock mode is disabled.
  • Morning opening: mode:Choose whether morning opening happens before sunrise, after sunrise, uses an absolute time, or is supplied by an entity.
  • Morning opening: time:Depending on the selected mode: relative delay from sunrise or fixed time of day. Ignored in external mode.
  • Covers to automate:Select the covers the automation should control (required).
  • Weather forecast sensor:Select a weather entity that supports daily forecasts (required).
