How to make a Home Assistant floor plan
Home Assistant has no built-in floor plan; floors only group areas by level. The usual approach is a picture elements card over an image of your plan. ha-floorplan links an SVG drawing to entities, Sweet Home 3D renders a 3D plan with lights, and Vulpo Lumen builds a 3D model from a LiDAR scan.
What Home Assistant has built in
Home Assistant added floors in version 2024.4 to group areas by level, for example to turn off every light upstairs. Floors do not draw a plan. The built-in way to show a plan is a dashboard card that places entities on top of an image of it.
1. Picture elements card
The picture elements card ships with Home Assistant. Upload an image of your floor plan, then place state icons, labels and buttons on it by percentage coordinates. It needs no add-ons and works in every app that shows Home Assistant dashboards. The downsides: elements are positioned by hand in YAML, and positions can drift on screens with a different aspect ratio.
2. ha-floorplan
ha-floorplan is an open-source custom card (Apache 2.0, installable through HACS). You draw your plan as an SVG, give shapes the IDs of your entities, and the card colours rooms, shows states and runs actions when you tap them. It is the most flexible option, at the cost of drawing and maintaining the SVG yourself.
3. Sweet Home 3D renders
Sweet Home 3D is a free interior design app. The community plugin home-assistant-floor-plan renders your 3D model once as a base image and once per light, then generates a picture elements card that blends in the light images as lights turn on. The result looks like a lit 3D model of your home. Rendering takes time, and furniture changes mean rendering again.
4. A LiDAR scan with Vulpo Lumen
Vulpo Lumen scans rooms with the LiDAR sensor of an iPhone 12 Pro or newer Pro model, or an iPad Pro with LiDAR, using Apple's RoomPlan. You place furniture from a catalog of 200+ models, link lights, media and other objects to Home Assistant entities, and control them inside the 3D scene; lights show their real colour and brightness. Multi-floor homes are scanned floor by floor. Lumen runs in the Vulpo app on iPhone, iPad and Mac rather than in a Home Assistant dashboard, and it is part of Vulpo Pro. Vulpo is made by the publisher of this site.
Which one to choose
For a quick plan on a dashboard everyone in the house sees, start with the picture elements card. For a precise, styled plan that you are happy to draw, use ha-floorplan. For a photorealistic wall panel, use Sweet Home 3D renders. For a 3D model without drawing anything, scan with Vulpo Lumen.
Questions
Does Home Assistant have a native floor plan?
No, as of Home Assistant 2026.10. Floors and areas organize devices by level and room, and dashboards are generated from them, but there is no built-in plan view. Floor plans are built with the picture elements card or a custom card.
Can I make a 3D floor plan without 3D software?
Yes, with a LiDAR scan. Vulpo Lumen builds the model from a scan on a LiDAR iPhone or iPad instead of a drawing.
