# Moon Astro

> Moon Astro is a Marketplace integration for Home Assistant. It has 152 installs sharing analytics, works locally and was last updated October 1, 2026.

Moon Astro is a local Home Assistant integration that computes Moon positions and events with Skyfield and the DE440 ephemeris. It adds sensors for phase, azimuth, elevation, illumination, distance, parallax, and ecliptic coordinates, both topocentric and geocentric, plus a binary sensor for whether the Moon is above the horizon. Further sensors give the next and previous moonrise, moonset, apogee, perigee, and the four main lunation phases, along with zodiac sign and degree and the name of the next full moon. Observer latitude, longitude, and elevation are entered in the setup dialog. Options cover the position update interval, the choice between the Home Assistant time zone and another one, and a fallback interval for refreshing the event-based sensors. Event sensors are recalculated shortly after the next upcoming event and carry an attribute with the time of their next update.

## Supports

- **Works locally**: Talks to your devices on your own network. No vendor cloud in between.
- **From the Marketplace**: Installed through the Marketplace, formerly HACS.
- **Actively maintained**: Its author released or pushed a change in the last six months.

## Setting it up

Install it from the Marketplace and restart Home Assistant, then add it under Settings, Devices and services.

### Observer location

- **Latitude**: Geographic latitude in decimal degrees, positive north of the equator.
- **Longitude**: Geographic longitude in decimal degrees, positive east of Greenwich.
- **Elevation (m)**: Height above sea level, in meters.

Also asked when changing the connection.

### After setup

- **Sensors update interval (seconds)**: Seconds between two computations of the current Moon position (60 to 21600). Shorter intervals increase CPU usage.
- **Use the Home Assistant time zone**: Use the Home Assistant time zone for the calendar months that name full moons. Disable it to pick another zone below.
- **Time zone**: IANA time zone used when the Home Assistant time zone is not used. Timestamps themselves are always published as UTC instants.
- **Events refresh fallback interval (seconds)**: Seconds between two forced recomputations of the event-based sensors (3600 to 604800), in case the refresh scheduled after the next event is missed. 24 hours is plenty.

## Entities

- **Binary sensors**: Above horizon
- **Sensors**: Phase, Azimuth, Elevation, Illumination, Distance, Parallax, Ecliptic longitude (topocentric), Ecliptic latitude (topocentric), Ecliptic longitude (geocentric), Ecliptic latitude (geocentric), Next rise, Next set, and 36 more
