# Camera Lux

> Camera Lux is a Marketplace integration for Home Assistant. It has 64 installs sharing analytics, works locally and was last updated October 26, 2026.

Camera Lux is a custom integration that estimates ambient light in lux from a camera feed or an image URL. It adds a virtual lux sensor to Home Assistant that runs locally and can be used for lighting automations or for monitoring light conditions. Each sensor takes either a camera entity or a direct image URL, and the update interval can be set per sensor. A region of interest limits the measurement to part of the image, and a named algorithm sets how brightness becomes lux. A full-scale lux setting calibrates all readings up or down. Optional infrared detection handles cameras in night mode by reporting a measured value, a fixed lux or unavailable, and optional frozen-feed detection marks the sensor unavailable when frames repeat exactly.

## Supports

- **Works locally**: Talks to your devices on your own network. No vendor cloud in between.
- **From the Marketplace**: Installed through the Marketplace, formerly HACS.
- **Actively maintained**: Its author released or pushed a change in the last six months.

## Setting it up

Install it from the Marketplace and restart Home Assistant, then add it under Settings, Devices and services.

## From the README

> Camera Lux is a custom Home Assistant integration that utilizes a camera feed or direct image URL to estimate ambient light levels (lux) in your environment. By analyzing images from your cameras, cameralux provides virtual lux readings that can be used to automate lighting, monitor lighting conditions, and enhance your smart home setup.
>
> - Real-Time Lux Monitoring: Continuously estimate ambient light levels using your existing cameras.
> - Configurable Update Intervals: Customize how frequently each sensor updates its lux readings.
> - Region of Interest (ROI): Focus on specific areas within the camera's field of view for more accurate measurements.
> - Named Algorithms: Pick how brightness becomes lux by camera type — no power-law tuning required.
> - Full-Scale Lux: One calibration knob that raises or lowers all readings.
> - IR Detection: A camera in IR mode measures its own illuminator, not ambient light — enable detection (per-camera chroma threshold + per-pixel gray verification) and declare what to report when an IR…
> - Unavailable Lux Thresholds: Optionally mark the sensor unavailable when lux falls below or rises above configured thresholds — go offline rather than publish a reading outside the trustworthy…
> - Frozen-Feed Detection (opt-in): When enabled, each cycle fetches the frame twice, a moment apart, and compares bytes. A live camera never produces identical bytes twice (sensor noise); only a stuck…
