# Open Vehicle Monitoring System

> Open Vehicle Monitoring System is a Marketplace integration for Home Assistant. It has 143 installs sharing analytics, works locally and was last updated October 25, 2026.

Open Vehicle Monitoring System connects an OVMS V3 vehicle module to Home Assistant over MQTT. It discovers the metrics the module publishes and creates entities from them, including sensors, binary sensors, a vehicle location tracker and switches for climate control, charge control and valet mode. Where a metric has no built-in definition, the integration asks the module which unit it uses instead of guessing from the topic name. Actions allow sending commands to the module, setting module features and controlling climate and charging, with rate limiting on commands. Options cover the MQTT topic structure, secure connections with certificate verification, a stored PIN for locking and valet mode, a topic blacklist, and hiding sensors that stop updating. It works locally and is set up in the UI.

## Supports

- **Works locally**: Talks to your devices on your own network. No vendor cloud in between.
- **From the Marketplace**: Installed through the Marketplace, formerly HACS.
- **Actively maintained**: Its author released or pushed a change in the last six months.

## Setting it up

Install it from the Marketplace and restart Home Assistant, then add it under Settings, Devices and services.

- **Connection Port**
- **Verify SSL/TLS Certificate**: SSL/TLS certificate verification only applies to secure ports (8883, 8084). Stored PIN support (for lock/unlock and valet/unvalet) requires verified TLS.
- **Topic Blacklist**: A comma-separated list of topic patterns to filter out. This prevents unwanted entities from being created. Any topic containing these patterns will be ignored. Use this to filter high-frequency log topics that create too many entities.
- **Stored PIN**
- **PIN Code**: Store your OVMS device PIN here so you don't have to enter it every time you lock or unlock. The same stored PIN is also automatically used by the valet/unvalet switch. Without a stored PIN, Home Assistant will prompt for one when locking/unlocking; the valet switch will fall back to a neutral placeholder, which is enough for vehicles that don't validate the PIN (e.g. Fiat 500e). Only available on verified secure MQTT connections.
- **Entity Staleness Management**: Automatically hide inactive sensors after a period without updates to reduce UI clutter and improve performance
- **Delete History**: Delete history when hiding stale sensors (unchecked = hide only, preserves history)

## From the README

> The Open Vehicle Monitoring System (OVMS) integration for Home Assistant. Connect your electric vehicle with Home Assistant via MQTT, automatically creating sensors for all vehicle metrics.
>
> - Automatic Discovery: Detects all metrics published by your OVMS module without manual configuration
> - Entity Creation: Creates appropriate Home Assistant entities based on data type with intelligent state parsing
> - Units from the Module: MQTT carries bare values, so for metrics this integration has no definition for it asks the module (metrics list -n) which unit each metric is in, instead of guessing from the…
> - Smart Categorization: Organizes entities into logical groups (battery, climate, location, etc.)
> - Real-time Updates: Entities update as new data is published through MQTT
> - Complete Entity Set: Shortly after setting a vehicle up, and after a Home Assistant restart where previously discovered entities are still unavailable, the integration asks the module for a full…
> - Command Interface: Send commands to your vehicle through services with proper rate limiting
> - Vehicle Status: Track online/offline status of your vehicle automatically
> - Secure Communication: Supports TLS/SSL connections to MQTT brokers with certificate verification
> - Vehicle-Specific Metrics: Special support for VW e-UP!, Smart ForTwo (453/EQ), Smart ED (451), Nissan Leaf, Renault Twizy, and MG ZS-EV - with additional vehicle models planned
> - Diagnostics Support: Provides detailed diagnostics for troubleshooting
