# OpenThread Border Router

> OpenThread Border Router is an app for Home Assistant. It has 40.4k installs sharing analytics and was last updated October 26, 2026.

OpenThread Border Router is an app that turns a Home Assistant installation into a Thread border router. The border router can be used to commission Matter devices that connect through Thread. Home Assistant Core detects the app and creates an Open Thread Border Router integration, which is configured automatically on Core 2023.3 and newer. It needs an 802.15.4 radio flashed with OpenThread RCP firmware, such as Home Assistant Yellow, SkyConnect or Connect ZBT-1, or Connect ZBT-2. Setup consists of choosing the radio device in the app configuration and starting the app. An optional web interface for debugging can be enabled by exposing its ports on the host, and the app runs on Home Assistant OS with hardware access and host networking.

## Setting it up

Install it under Settings, Apps, then start it.

## Permissions

- **Host network**: Uses the host's network directly instead of its own.
- **Extra system rights**: Asks for privileged Linux capabilities.
- **Hardware access**: Can reach USB, serial or GPIO devices.
- **Supervisor API**: Can talk to the Supervisor, which manages apps and the system.

## Configuration

- **Device**: The serial port where the OpenThread RCP radio is attached.
- **Baudrate**: The serial port baudrate used to communicate with the Silicon Labs radio.
- **Hardware flow control**: Enable hardware flow control for serial port.
- **Backbone Network Interface**: The network interface used for the backbone network. If not specified, it falls back to the primary interface.
- **Network Device**: \<host:port\> when connecting to a device via sockets (takes precedence over above configuration). Not recommended! See documentation for more information.
- **OpenThread Border Router agent log level**: Set logging level of the OpenThread Border Router agent (otbr-agent).
- **OTBR firewall**: Use OpenThread Border Router firewall to block unnecessary traffic.
- **NAT64**: Enable IPv6 to IPv4 network address translation. This allows Thread devices to communicate with devices on the Internet.
- **Beta**: Enable beta mode to run a newer, experimental version of OpenThread Border Router.
