# File Explorer

> File Explorer is an app for Home Assistant. It has 1.8k installs sharing analytics and was last updated October 27, 2026.

File Explorer is a Home Assistant app that browses, edits, uploads and organizes the files of a Home Assistant installation. It adds a file manager page to the sidebar, built on FileBrowser Quantum, with an editor, previews, a search index and WebDAV. The directories it shows include the configuration, backups, media, shared files, certificates and the configuration folders of installed apps. Sign-in goes through Home Assistant, so each Home Assistant user gets a File Browser account named after them, and anyone who can open the app can change everything in those directories. The published port uses File Browser's own login screen instead. It requires Home Assistant OS and runs on aarch64 and amd64.

## Supports

- **Opens in the sidebar**: Its own page opens inside Home Assistant.
- **Actively maintained**: Its author released or pushed a change in the last six months.

## Setting it up

Add its app repository under Settings, Apps, then install and start it.

## From the docs

> A file manager for your Home Assistant installation, in a panel on the sidebar. It shows the directories Home Assistant keeps its files in, and lets you browse them, upload to them, move things about, unpack an archive, edit a YAML file in place, preview a photo or a PDF, and search across the lot.

## Permissions

Needs no special permissions.

## Configuration

- **Log level**: Controls the level of log output by the app and can be changed to be more or less verbose, which might be useful when you are dealing with an unknown issue. Each level automatically includes the messages of a more severe level.
- **Password**: The password of the admin account, which is what the login screen on the published port accepts. Leave it empty when Home Assistant signs you in over Ingress and you do not use the published port from a browser.
- **Sign in with Home Assistant**: Let Home Assistant sign you in when you open this app from the sidebar, with an account of your own named after your Home Assistant user. Turn it off to have File Browser ask for the admin password instead.
- **SSL**: Enables/Disables encrypted SSL (HTTPS) for direct access to the app. This setting has no effect on the Ingress service.
- **Certificate file**: The certificate file to use for SSL. The file must be stored in the /ssl/ directory.
- **Private key file**: The private key file to use for SSL. The file must be stored in the /ssl/ directory.
